Repair Your Smile with Gum Grafting

If advanced gum recession has left part of your tooth root exposed, you may benefit from the restorative benefits of gum grafting. During this procedure, Dr. Yani Dixon will transplant healthy gum tissue from other parts of your mouth to the area affected by gum recession.

Whether performing restorative, preventative, or cosmetic procedures, Dr. Dixon’s office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, is committed to using holistic techniques that eliminate the need for harmful chemicals. Once your gums have fully healed, you can enjoy the benefits of restored oral health and a more even gum line.

Unhealthy gums can not only undermine your entire smile, but your oral health, as well.

Benefits of Gum Grafting

Gum grafting delivers restorative and cosmetic benefits, including:

  • Cessation of gum recession
  • Enhanced gum health
  • Better-protected tooth root
  • Improved comfort while eating and drinking
  • Reduced temperature sensitivity
  • More even gum line
  • More attractive smile
  • Boosted self-confidence

Because gum recession is a medical condition, dental insurance often covers part or all of the cost of the oral surgery. If you have concerns about the affordability of gum grafting, our office offers CareCredit®, Lending Tree, and in-house financing options to help patients afford treatment.

Are You a Candidate?

Patients who wish to undergo gum grafting should be in good overall health and free of gum disease. For example, if a tooth affected by gum recession is too loose, it may not serve as an adequate anchor for the transplanted tissue. During your consultation at our Ft. Lauderdale clinic, Dr. Yani will also examine your smile to make sure that you do not have any medical conditions or take any medications that could potentially complicate surgery.

You may be an ideal candidate for gum grafting if:

  • Gum recession has exposed part of your tooth root
  • You are bothered by the appearance of your gums
  • You are experiencing tooth sensitivity or discomfort as a result of gum recession

How the Procedure Works

The total length of your gum grafting procedure will depend on the number of treatment areas. Dr. Yani will begin by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area and ensure your comfort. Once you are fully prepped, Dr. Yani will remove healthy gum tissue from a previously selected area and then artfully suture it in place over the site affected by recession. If necessary, tissue-stimulating proteins may be applied. She will be careful to consider the aesthetic results so that your smile looks as natural as possible.

The health and cosmetic benefits of gum grafting can last a lifetime

Before leaving the office, you will be provided with detailed recovery guidelines. Recommendations may include:

  • Resting your head in an elevated position at night
  • Avoiding strenuous activities for the first few days after surgery
  • Abstaining from spicy or hot foods
  • Avoiding brushing the surgical site

Most patients are able to return to work the day following surgery. However, it may take up to two weeks for your gums to fully heal.

By having your procedure performed at our Ft. Lauderdale clinic, you can benefit from the use of advanced dental technology such as digital x-rays, computerized tomography (CT) scanning systems, CEREC, and intraoral cameras.
