Safe Amalgam Fillings Removal
You are probably familiar with amalgam (metal) fillings. For years, amalgam was the filling material of choice. However, it is well known that these fillings contain mercury. The World Health Organization considers these fillings the most significant source of mercury vapor exposure outside of an industrial setting. In fact, the WHO reports that these mercury levels exceed the levels set for air and food. If you want to replace your metal fillings, it is important to go to a doctor who can perform amalgam fillings removal without exposing you to mercury vapor. At Holistic & Healing Dentistry in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Dr. Yani Dixon uses the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) to protect your health and safety.
What Happens during a SMART Procedure?
Protecting the patient and the dental team is the priority when performing a SMART procedure. To prepare you for treatment, your dentist will:
Give you an absorbent mixture to rinse with and swallow. This is a safety measure to protect your body from potential mercury absorption.
Set up a full-body barrier that also covers the head and neck.
Set up an oxygen breathing tool for use during the procedure.
Apply a dental dam to protect the surrounding teeth and gums from potential mercury absorption.
During the removal process, your dentist will attempt to remove large portions of the amalgam at a time, to cause less disruption and result in the least amount of mercury released. After removing the amalgam, another absorption rinse will be administered. Finally, your dentist will fill the space left behind with composite resin for a natural-looking and metal-free restoration.
If you have metal fillings, there are both practical and cosmetic benefits to undergoing SMART treatment by Dr. Yani.
Other Benefits of SMART
Tooth-colored fillings provide many important advantages over metal fillings. In addition to looking completely natural and being metal-free, these fillings are actually a better fit for your teeth in other ways. They bond more securely with the tooth, and react to temperature changes at virtually the same rate as dental tissue. Metal fillings, on the other hand, expand and contract more rapidly, which can cause teeth to fracture over time. In short, if you have metal fillings, there are both practical and cosmetic benefits to undergoing SMART treatment by Dr. Yani.
