Improve Your Candidacy for Dental Implants with a Sinus Lift
A sinus lift at our Fort Lauderdale, FL, dental practice can increase dental implants eligibility for patients who have sustained significant bone loss in the upper jaw. Since 2008, Dr. Yani at Holistic & Healing Dentistry has been serving the community with top-tier dental care. We are committed to using holistic materials to help eliminate unnecessary and harmful chemicals for a safer dental experience. Our modern equipment, cutting-edge technology, and passionate care are just a few of the reasons patients make our practice their dental home.
When Is a Sinus Lift Recommended?
Prolonged tooth loss in the upper jaw can cause the maxillary sinuses to drop down and invade the space once occupied by teeth roots. If this occurs, dental implants cannot be placed because they would penetrate the sinus membrane. When this occurs, a sinus lift may be recommended to prepare your upper jaw and help you qualify for dental implants.
To qualify for a sinus lift, patients must be in good general health and should be well enough to undergo an oral surgery procedure. They should also be free of decay, gum disease, or other serious dental issues that could hinder the healing process. During a consultation at our Fort Lauderdale practice, Dr. Yani can determine if a sinus lift is right for you.
Understanding the Sinus Lift Procedure
During your initial consultation, a cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scan is usually taken. This helps the surgeon visualize the exact location of the sinuses for accurate treatment. To begin the sinus lift, local anesthesia is administered to numb the gums. An incision is then created in the gum tissue near the back of the upper jaw. Once the underlying bone is visible, the surgeon then makes a small hinged window in the jaw to access the sinus membrane.
Our modern equipment, cutting-edge technology, and passionate care are just a few of the reasons patients make our practice their dental home.
Special dental instruments are then used to gently place the membrane back in its original position. The vacant space is packed with bone grafting material. Finally, the treatment site is covered with a biocompatible membrane, the gums are repositioned, and the incision is closed. A sinus lift procedure can be completed in our office in about one hour. For complex cases, Dr. Yani works alongside our in-house specialist.
Your Healing and Recovery
Immediately following a sinus lift, patients may notice soreness and swelling. These side effects are normal and should diminish within a few days. In the meantime, symptoms can be mitigated with anti-inflammatory medications and the application of cold compresses. Most individuals are able to return to work and other normal routines in 24 to 48 hours. Though patients will be comfortable after the first week or so, full healing takes about four to six months. During this time, the bone grafting material will help restore lost volume and density in the jaw. Once the recovery period is over, dental implants can then be placed.
