Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom teeth typically emerge when a person is between the ages of 17 and 24. As wisdom teeth grow, they often become impacted, which means there is not enough space for them at the back of the mouth. When wisdom teeth are impacted, they can cause a variety of painful symptoms, including pain, swelling, infection, damage to adjacent teeth and jaw stiffness.
The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure
Wisdom tooth extraction is a common and often a medically necessary procedure. At Dr Yani's practice, we work to make the procedure as comfortable and relaxing as possible to ensure there are no surprises and your life is disrupted as little as possible.
Wisdom tooth extraction is either done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with a sedative. The surgery treats the pain and gum infection that can come with the growth of the wisdom teeth. It also prevents the results of orthodontic treatment from being compromised.
Candidates for Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Even if your or your child's wisdom teeth have not yet caused problems, it's likely that they will negatively affect dental health sometime in the future if no intervention is taken. Dentists recommend that impacted wisdom teeth be removed when patients are between ages 14 and 22 - regardless of whether the wisdom teeth are causing problems. The complications of wisdom tooth extraction increase with age, so we recommend that teenagers visit our practice for a dental exam during which we can check the wisdom teeth and decide on the appropriate course of treatment.
Wisdom tooth extraction at our practice is a safe procedure that will prevent many future problems and keep your smile healthy and beautiful. Please contact us today for a complimentary consultation.
